Name of the ball Telstar was formed from the respective titles of the American artificial satellite of Earth, put into orbit in 1962. Moreover, the ball has been nicknamed “Star of Television”, because design of the ball is compatible for black-and-white TV.

The Adidas Telstar Durlast was the official match ball of the 1970 FIFA World Cup in
Mexico. It was the first-ever Adidas World Cup ball and became iconic for its 32
panel black-and-white design, which improved visibility on black-and-white
televisions. Made of genuine leather with a Durlast coating, it was more durable and
water-resistant than previous balls. The Telstar name was inspired by the Telstar
satellite, symbolizing global connectivity. The ball was used in historic matches,
including Brazil’s legendary victory, led by Pelé. It set the standard for modern soccer
ball designs and remains a classic in football history. The black pentagons and
white hexagons became the signature look for future soccer balls.
